Psalm 27:1 - God Is Our Light, Salvation and Strength.Psalm 27:1 (NKJV) The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?Psalm 27:1 (NLT) The LORD is my light and my salvation - so why should I be afraid? The LORD is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble? INTRODUCTION This psalm was written by David when he was "a hunted fugitive, finding refuge in the rocks and caves of the wilderness" (Ed 164). It reveals the psalmist's spirit of absolute confidence in God amid the perils of flight. It has been called The Tonic Psalm. In no other psalm is David's yearning after the service of the sanctuary as intensely expressed as here. Some suggest 1 Sam. 22:22 as a background to the psalm. The psalm has three divisions: vs. 1-6 express the poet's assured confidence in God, despite the threatenings of the enemy; vs. 7-12 cry out plaintively for help; and vs. 13, 14, as a conclusion, find sure relief in hopeful trust in God. In the modern Jewish ritual, Ps. 27 is recited daily throughout the sixth month in preparation for the New Year and the Day of Atonement. [SDA Bible Commentary] COMMENTARY PEARL True Valor When a live shell landed on the upper deck of the HMS Hecla, during the Crimean War's 1854 Battle of Bomarsund, all hands were ordered to fling themselves down. But Charles Davis Lucas had other ideas. Seeing the fuse still hissing, he rushed forward, grabbed the explosive, and tossed it overboard. Just before hitting the water, it made a tremendous roar. For his act of valor, Lucas became the first recipient of the Victoria Cross, the most prestigious award of the British honors system. No greater warrior is found in all of Scripture than David, the shepherd-king. Had awards been given to Israelite soldiers, he would have received the highest decoration for extreme bravery when he killed Goliath. As a youth, he faced "a man of war from his youth" (1 Samuel 17:33), a single stone bringing down a giant in bronze armor. Who wouldn't be tempted to tell stories of his own bravery? Not David. He attributed the victory to God and Israel's army when he said to the Philistine, "The battle is the LORD'S, and He will give you into our hands" (v. 47, emphasis added). Today's Bible promise, part of a Psalm David wrote while being hunted by Saul, reveals the source of the shepherd's courage. Pursued through the wilderness by a jealous king, he could sing, "The LORD is my light and my salvation." Cutting off a corner of Saul's robe in a cave (1 Samuel 24:4), he could proclaim, "Whom shall I fear?" And stealing the king's spear in the night (26:12), he could declare, "The LORD is the strength of my life!" You may bravely face any danger when God is your stronghold. Lord, I will stand boldly for You, knowing that You are the source of my strength. Like the captive exile, they will be in fear of death by starvation or by violence. But the Holy One who divided the Red Sea before Israel, will manifest His mighty power and turn their captivity.... Says the psalmist: "In the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion: in the secret of His tabernacle shall He hide me." Psalm 27:5. Christ has spoken: "Come, My people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast. For, behold, the Lord cometh out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity." Isaiah 26:20, 21. Glorious will be the deliverance of those who have patiently waited for His coming and whose names are written in the book of life. {GC 634} [Remnant SB re v. 5] LINKS FOR FURTHER STUDY Psalm 27:1 - God Is Our Light, Salvation and Strength. https://www.abible.com/devotions/2024/20240301-0837.html Psalm 27:1 - The Triple Shield of Defense Against All Threats. https://www.abible.com/devotions/2021/20210209-0920.html http://www.abible.com/devotions/2010/20100804-1551.html Romans 8:31 - Fear Not for God Is for You! https://www.abible.com/devotions/2024/20240706-1318.html Joshua 1:9 - The Command to be Courageous. https://www.abible.com/devotions/2024/20240519-0857.html LINKS WORTH CHECKING OUT https://abible.com/links/ |
