Genesis 50:20-21 - Turning Life's Hardships into Stepping Stones.

Genesis 50:20-21 (NIV) You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. 21 So then, don't be afraid. I will provide for you and your children." And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them.

INTRODUCTION

Joseph's wise, theological answer here in this verse has gone down in history as the classic statement of God's sovereignty over the affairs of men. [MacArthur Daily Bible 2003]

God brought good from the brothers' evil deed, Potiphar's wife's false accusation, the cup-bearer's neglect, and seven years of famine. The experiences in Joseph's life taught him that God brings good from evil for those who trust him. Do you trust God enough to wait patiently for him to bring good out of bad situations? You can trust him because, as Joseph learned, God can overrule people's evil intentions to bring about his intended results. [Life Application SB 2019]

COMMENTARY PEARL

The Greatest Exchange
"You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good." Outside of Jesus' earthly ministry, I don't know whether more powerful words were ever spoken by a human. Joseph, the man who uttered these words, experienced extreme betrayal by his own family year after year. Joseph was a human, like you and me. Even still, in the face of rejection, he was deeply in touch with God's sovereignty and goodness.
How can you come to experience that level of God's power and grace? You have to understand that God is in charge. Joseph never lost sight of God's love and purpose, and he knew God was using him to bring glory to Himself and salvation for many people.
When you comprehend that God is in charge and all-powerful, you, too, can trust that all the evil you see in the world can and will be used for good. God will see you through every darkness, every sin, every pain the Enemy brings, and He will redeem it for His glory.
Dear God, no man-made intentions will ever triumph over Your ordained rule and reign. I find comfort knowing You are always in control. [Grace and Glory by Louie Giglio]
